Free Ski Friday

Well, we finished up our second week here at KMS. With some great dryland sessions, a little bit of snow time and Sarah and Kayla joining the group we sense that winter is close. We have an awesome team this year and certainly look forward to our KMS alumni, Jeremy Gravell, Alta Curtis, Lizzybeth Smith and Victoria Smith joining us once their first semester is done.

The '09 Selections crew (Allison, Alta, Bryan, Jeremy, Kayla, Kat D, Lizzy, Nick, Sterling, Tyler and Victoria) will depart Dec 9th for US Selections Event in Winter Park, Colorado. Our current KMS crew will be taking a warm up trip out to Colorado next Weds through Thanksgiving with Coach Matt. The Selections Team is also excited to meet up with their former teammates, Tim Chamberlain, Becca Goldstein (KMS '09) and Rob Burden (KMS '07) at US Selections events in December as well.

So anyway, the conditions were surprisingly good today, the sun was out and the crew enjoyed "free ski Friday" as Coaches Deb and Matt continued to help the athletes with their progression back to snow.

We are trying to remain positive about the weather this weekend, but it is difficult! We will be making our plan for Sunday after we hear what the mountain plans to do. Check back here around 6pm tomorrow night.

As we were leaving we did see a new feature for the freeride crew being constructed on Snowdon, so that is cool. What would be cooler would be cooler temperatures and SNOW.

Have a great day off!

Mountain opens for Veterans Day

Today the crew got to get back on snow for another day of skiing. Killington opened the mountain today for Veterans Day, and I just want to say thank you to all of our Veterans out there for serving our country and serving our country proudly. We appreciate everything you have done.

It was great to be back on snow again and get back to work. Since we are still in the stages of getting back on snow, we continue to work on some basic fundamentals. Today we worked on forward pressure and body position. Coach Matt, Justin, and myself split the crew into three small groups and got to work. Working with drills like having the athletes unbuckle their boots and ski, wedge turns, gs turns, etc. we help get the athletes back up in the front of their boots and rippin turns. After our training on the hill was over, we headed to Snow Shed parking lot to do hill sprints on the back slope, and then a relay race on the bridge over to the grand, then headed back to the school for a cool down and stretch.

Tomorrow we will be meeting in the gym a 7:50 for our much anticipated upper lift. The boys are already talking about their beach muscles for next summer, and are making sure that they get an early start. Unfortunately the mountain will not be open, and they are hoping to be open for the weekend. So we are going to get some tramp work in, some of the freeride crew will hit up the box, and we will tie up the athletes equipment needs. So even though we are not on snow we continue to be productive. Mother Nature will turn around and give us one of the best seasons yet, I can feel it.

Endurance, Football, Jibbin, and Yoga

As we wait for the mountain to open, the freestyle crew and the mens alpine program headed down to the fields on River Rd. to do some workouts together in a big group. The workout consisted on starting with a 115 meter sprint (just think our mogul course is 135 meters longer in an all out sprint), some agility around some cones, one legged balance hops, some balance on a pipe with a med ball toss, balance squats, and one legged super mans. The athletes did this 7 times, and they killed it. Then we moved on to the football game, Alpine vs. Freestyle. Unfortunately the freestyle crew came out with a loss, I can see us being victorious in our rematch whenever that may be.

After we were done at the fields we headed back to KMS. Some of the athletes had some equipment things to work on, a few went on the tramp, and the freeriders hit up the box with the drop in out back. I have some photos but they are not uploading, I will continue to work on it.

We all went into the gym to finish up the afternoon with our first yoga class of the season. Mary Beth Bailey, one of the teachers at KMS, was kind enough to lead the class for the mens alpine team and the freestyle crew. It was new to most, but a few of the athletes have been taking part in some yoga classes at their home gyms. It's a great way to loosen your body up and still get a nice workout.

Tomorrow we are headed back up to the mountain to SKI!!!! The crew will meet in the gym at 12:30 for our usual warm up, and then get to work.

Monday Captured!

The crew showed up for training at 7am today and had breakfast together after a meeting where we discussed the plan du jour. Course, some team members missed breakfast and the meeting, but I do not anticipate that happening again - right, Darius, T-Dox and Dan?

We spent the morning in the gym with a strength/core workout. DJ led a tuning clinic for the younger crew while the older guys prepared the battlefield. The first session of Capture the Flag ensued and ended in a tie - can you believe that? Zemba and Keating on opposite teams and they threw in the towel (literally) and called it a tie! huh...

Coach Matt joined the team for afternoon sport from 5 to 6. From what I heard they completed a recovery work out and then tramped for a bit. Rumor had it that the freeride contingent was going to check out the new ramp/rail set up out back...not sure if it happened.

It was a good day.
